PTT is holding it's first Electrical Workshop - 15 November 2010

We at PTT are excited to announce that we are holding our first one-day workshop on Monday 15 November, here at our Tring training centre.

The day's workshop will include the topics of:-

17th Edition Certificates Explained
Ring Circuit Testing
Periodic Inspection - A practical approach, and
High Integrity Earthing

All sessions will be taken by our highly qualified tutors.

The workshop is very reasonably priced at £30 per delegate and includes a buffet lunch.  Places are strictly limited, and will be booked on a first come first served basis.

For more information, or to book a place, ring us soon on 01442-828754.

Small Scale Embedded Generators (SSEGs)

After consulting with our City & Guilds External Verifier, we have learnt that the present Solar Voltaic qualification is due to be updated and expanded to include other types of SSEG; wind turbines, heat pumps . . . .
Whilst we will continue to develop a course for solar pv we will not 'go live' until the details of the new course become clearer.

In the meantime we are proposing to run a one day lighting course.  Lighting is changing rapidly and some electricians are finding it difficult to advise their customers on the latest technology.  The course will be designed to de-mystify the rather exotic terms in which new lighting systems are described, and include an appreciation of terms such as 'lumens/watt' and 'lux levels.
It is hoped to have working examples of some of the new technology.

I would appreciate feedback from readers on whether they would be interested in such a course.

Domestic Photovoltaic Systems (solar panels)

We have been looking into the possibility of providing a course leading to the City and Guilds Certificate in Installing and Testing Domestic Photovoltaic Systems (2372).

Having seen the syllabus this proves to be a very demanding course which includes amongst other things; working at heights, roofing skills and some electronics as wells as mainstream electrical know-how.

It also has become apparent that anyone wishing to instal solar panels must have an MCS Certificate (Microgenration Installation Standard MIS 3002) .  This is a bit like Part P certification for domestic installation, except that it is 'voluntary'.  However, if an installer doesn't have the MIS 3002 Certificate then his or her client cannot claim reimbursement for the electricity they generate, so the installer wouldn't get much work!  For full details of what you need to do to be certified, click on the following link http://www.microgenerationcertification.org/docs/standards/MIS%203002%20Issue%201.6%20Solar%20PV%2028%20Jan%202010.pdf

To this effect, we aim to design our course so that not only do our candidates achieve the C&G 2372, but they are also prepared to apply for their MIS 3002 Certificate.

The course will be at least 5 days in duration and the cost will be around the £800 + VAT mark.

Anyone wanting to look in detail at the City and Guilds syllabus, should click on the link http://www.cityandguilds.com/documents/ind_engineering_electrical_electronic/2372_Qual_Handbook_Web-version.pdf

Comments and suggestions would be very welcome on any of the above.

Experiences from Advanced Periodic course

Students on our Advanced Periodic course a couple of weeks ago went and did a periodic inspection on a one-bedroomed rental flat in the local area.  Although small, this installation yielded an impressive number of non-compliances including:-
* Class 1 light fitting in bathroom - not earthed
* Bathroom extractor fan - no means of isolation
* Insulation resistance on lighting circuit less than 1Mohm
* Live voltages within property when property isolated at main switch
* Washing machine and fridge - no means of accessible isolation
* Smoke detectors fed from another source of supply
* Electric shower pump fed from lights with no means of isolation.

The students were surprised that such a small, relatively modern flat could have so many regulation violations.  We look forward to presenting the periodic certificate to the client!

Accommodation

We're currently in discussion with several local hotels to obtain the best rates for our students.  So far we have negotiated deals with The Rose and Crown in Tring and The Holiday Inn, Aston Clinton Road, Aylesbury.
We're going to have a look round The Holiday Inn on Friday so we can report back on its facilities, but we're told it has a swimming pool, gym and widescreen TV in the bar.  Other hotels we plan to contact in the near future are The Pendley Manor Hotel and Premier Inn, so please watch our accommodation page for future deals.
